Chapter 24

Steve collected his items from the sergeant at the booking desk and switched his phone on. He knew Tanya would be worried, but the number of voicemails she had left made him feel very guilty. He stuffed his wallet and keys into his pocket and hurried out of the station and onto the street as he dialled her number. His stomach was rumbling and it had clearly just been raining: the ground was soaked. The clouds above Steve looked threatening as he studied the sky, the dial tone ringing in his ear.

“Steve, are you OK?” Tanya said at the other end of the line.

“Hey baby, I’m so sorry. I spent the night in a cell and I’m just leaving the police station now. Eddie is done for, but it wasn’t without trying to drag me down with him. Listen, there’s something I need to talk to you about. I probably should have mentioned this sooner, but I didn’t want you worrying more than you probably already were.”

“Steve, you’re scaring me a little bit.”

“Look, you don’t need to be worried. I’ve been informing on the gang to the NCA, they’re like the FBI, but British. If it weren’t for them, I’d be locked up now, but instead I’m leaving the police station a free man. We need one more piece of the puzzle, and then we’ll be rid of them.”

“Oh Steve, I wish we’d had a chance to discuss this. I’m really glad you’re not going to prison, but I could have helped share the burden. You must have been under so much stress. Don’t forget we’re a team: your troubles are mine, and mine are yours.”

Steve wasn’t sure what to say. I wish I’d told her at the start. In fact, if I’d just spoken to her about what I wanted to do I’d never have got us into this mess. “How are the girls doing? I haven’t stopped thinking about them, and I’m going to give them the biggest hug when I get back.”

“They’re doing well, babe. They’re both in bed now, knackered from MMA. They miss their daddy, though.”

“Not as much as their daddy misses them. I’ve just got one more day to do up here in Nottingham, then I’ll be back in Hertford with you and the kids. We’re doing OK, babe; it won’t be like this for long.” Steve’s fist clenched. I’m going to beat that fat fucker. “Let’s just take one day at a time. We’ll make it, come what may. As long as we have each other, no challenge is too great.”

Steve thought he could hear Tanya smiling down the phone. “OK. I love you,” she said softly.

“I love you too. I’ll see you on Tuesday.”

Steve walked into the familiar setting of Jacques Casino Nottingham, the fountain in the shape of chips greeting him like an old friend. He made his way to the card room and was excited to see Benedict and Jack sitting at the final table. He glanced up at one of the TV screens fixed to the walls, showing there were only nine players left.
